Rad-ical Jewellery Makeover

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Alice is a big fan of sustainable design and recycled products. So, we had big smiles when we heard about the latest project by American not-for-profit organisation Ethical Metalsmiths. The project is aptly named ‘Radical Jewellery Makeover’ and is on display at Artisan in Brisbane. Over the past month Ethical Metalsmiths have teamed up with local Brisbane jewellers and students from the Queensland College of Arts to source metals from their local community, and the community came to the party with donations of old and unwanted jewellery totalling a staggering 18kg worth of synthetic and organic materials.

The students then selected pieces to re-create, refashion and recycle. The works are on display at Artisan in Brisbane now until the 28th August.  Or check out the blog here.

2 minutes with Claire Taylor – jeweller & metalsmith

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Long-time Alice jeweller & metalsmith – Claire Taylor – has created many a memorable piece for us, including those significant tokens of love! We’ve enjoyed working with her over the last years and thought you might like to meet her too…

How did you get into jewellery design?

Early on I collected stones and polished them. After traveling for a year I worked with jewellers in India. I was inspired there and bought lots of stones, making some strange pieces. When I returned to Melbourne I decided to study jewellery and did so for 3 years.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The freedom of hours and flexibility. I like to travel for inspiration, so if I manage my time well I can usually get away for some of the year for adventures and new ideas.  Also love hours of experimenting in the studio.

What’s your favourite piece out of your current collection?

Hmmm, it’s hard to decide! Some of my fave pieces are the animal bracelets – zebra, owl, birds… as they can still be worn and seen despite all the layers we need to wear for Melbourne winter.

Gold or silver?

I prefer to wear silver but enjoy using a combination of silver and gold in my work. I like to sometimes have just a small gold feature on a piece to give it a symbolic sense of preciousness.
