Rosemount Australian Fashion Week Day #3

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

This morning we awoke to rain and a trip across town at the crack of dawn to the Sydney Theatre Company where Romance Was Born would be putting on what we already knew would be THE show of the week. Surrounded on all sides by windows that peered out into the bright early morning sky and the sparkling water of Sydney harbour, the setting was magic. Before us was set out a sumptuous banquet of various flotsam including a mer-man and not one but four fresh squid lovingly decorated with pearls and glitter – as you do, Mark Vassallo knows no limits!  A glam mermaid played the harp while guests whispered expectantly.
The show started calmly with ready-to-wear straight from a beach side tea party. But the theatrics and drama soon ran high as models sauntered slowly around the room and centerpiece, stopping several times in front of the crowd to pose, cutting angular, serpentine silhouettes. With seashell covered shoes, pearl adorned nails and colourful, three-dimensional eye make-up we were in heaven as our fav models morphed into mysterious creatures from deep-sea mermaid kingdoms.

Rosemount Australian Fashion Week Day #2, TV front row exclusive

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Shopgirl’s last show of the day was TV, and we’re so excited about it we just had to give it its own entry! We were sitting in the front row and waiting for the show to start was like Christmas Eve when we were kids- all jittery and the butterflies in our tummies fluttering around like crazy! On the edge of our seats and unable to sit still, it was all we could do not to let out a giant ‘whoop!’ when the lights dimmed and the music started.

The show didn’t disappoint either; our hungry eyes followed each model from the moment she appeared from behind the scenes right to the end of the catwalk- until we had to turn our attention to the next model! Even from the front row we were craning our necks around corners just to drink in every last morsel of each outfit that we could. It was like delicious milk chocolate but for the eyes.

Our favourites included the kaleidoscopic printed jumpsuits that took galactic chic straight to the jungle and back again on a whirlwind expedition. Also on our list were the more demure nude pieces, including knitted onesies, draped silk minis and body con dresses accentuated with architectural black lines through the body that caught our dancing eyes. And if you know Shopgirl you’ll know that we’re also mad about TV’s laser cut everything

Rosemount Australian Fashion Week Day #2

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

It was another early start for Shopgirl, and as you can see from our sometimes creative, sometimes shiny gold invitations, it was a full schedule!

Our first port of call was the Konstantina Mittas show. A label we have dabbled with before, Konstantina showed off her bling as glittery eyed models took to the catwalk like spectacularly sparkling disco balls.

After the show we scooted off to an Arnsdorf showing, and were impressed by the lashings of coral and architectural cut outs. Even more impressive was our Jade photographed by Paris street fashion blogger Garance Dore, featured below. If you haven’t seen Garance’s blog yet, you probably should- she captures style from a softly feminine perspective while capturing unique, fleeting fashion moments.

Next in the line up was the Dhini and Gail Sorronda show. While Dhini presented a marching band themed military collection, Gail’s range was more befitting of tragic beauty, think Blanche Dubois or a female Gatsby. Gothic flappers faced off in starkly juxtaposed black and white and delicately feathered accessories.

Starving, we raced out of the show to a harbour side lunch of salad, salmon and Thai style salt and pepper squid. Yum! With full tummies we bundled into a cab to pay a visit to the lovely Stephanie Downey  of local Melbourne label Dress Up. Giving us some special Margiela-esque shouldered tops (which are quickly becoming a Melbourne staple) Stephanie made Shopgirl quietly content with her versatile brand of everyday wear.

In the afternoon we finally got to see Marnie Skillings in action! The show opened with a sexy, punk rock lady in spangly bikini top beating away at a lone drum kit, and as the models poured out from behind the scenes, they marched to the tough, hard, pulsating beat. We loved the raw biker chick edge of the collection and the way it was offset by the tea stained floral print and picnic princess aesthetic. Some favourite peices included boiler suits adorned with unexpectedly placed exposed zippers and sequined blazers that made us dream about next summer at Alice…

Spotted on the street: Maise ‘Team M’ basketball heels

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Admittedly, Shopgirl gave a little hop in the air, a clap of the hand and a high pitched exclamation when we saw these babies adorning the feet of Australian stylist Ms Fitz. The sartorial impresario not only wore the statement shoes (with her Tina Kalivas Zarafshan jumpsuit), she also masterminded them for the Maise ‘Team M’ SS 09-10 catwalk show last week!

Australian Fashion Week Day #1

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Bleary eyed and feeling less than fashionable, Shopgirl hit the airport this morning at some ungodly hour to make the trek to Sydney for Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. Skeptical as to whether we’d survive the turbulent flight without a hit of caffeine, our spirits were instantly lifted when we arrived in Sydney to find the sun shining down over the harbour.

We started the day with an impromptu preview of the new Beat Poet collection after bumping into the label’s designer James in the lobby at our hotel. Their signature menswear didn’t fail to impress with a range of shirts designed with versatility and practicality in mind. Based on the refined puritanism of Russian supremacist  writer Kazimir Malevich’s teachings, Beat Poet’s collection was purposeful and decisive. We were also pleased to see the label’s offerings for women; not only were the men’s shirts easily unisex (we dreamed of buying them for boyfriend and then stealing them back for ourselves!), the designers had refined previous looks in shapes to suit women while keeping that masculine edge.

Before our busy show schedule kicked off, we made a covert detour to have a sneak peek at Marnie Skillings‘ delightful new  range. We can only give you a whisper of what you can expect, so if you want the full story you’ll have to check back later this week for Shopgirl’s full coverage of the show! Think virginal princess meets rock goddess, a collection of fanciful summer wear tweaked with Marnie’s inimitable quirk and easy enigma. Our  favourite pieces included draped dresses in silk jersey with tea stained floral print, rose pink structured linen blazers and anything in a ‘Zeus’ print- a special print designed my Marine herself when she was painting in her backyard!

After we visited Marnie we had a quick break before our first show, so we stopped off for a coffee and a much appreciated dash around the Museum of Contemporary Art and Yayoi Kusama’s special exhibition. A long time loved artist of many a creative mind (we’re no exception), Kusama’s exhibition was thought-provoking and fanciful calling for complete surrender and ultimate immersion. We loved getting lost in her surreal field of infinitely repeating red and white created by a maze of mirrors, and would highly recommend the exhibition to those who are currently Sydney bound.

Our show schedule kicked off with Antipodium, a long time Alice friend and genuinely innovative Australian label. Their show was fast paced, angst ridden and full of leering imperfections, and yet communicated a triumphant joy . Here, anti-fashion gave stereotyped beauty the finger and instead embraced a punk revolution of beauty in all shapes and sizes.

Following Antipodium was the mad rush to Alpha60, where Alex and Georgie presented a collection that stayed true to their surrealist, noir roots, but betrayed a new passion. With sandy draped jersey and maxi silhouettes for women, sharp suiting and horizontal box pleating for men, the show had a ‘Children Of The Damned’ aesthetic as models stalked down the runway in necklaces adorned with decapitated dolls heads.

Our evening led us finally to Ellery, where we were left waiting an hour and a half for the show to begin!  Fortunately, the wait was made more pleasant by the fashion parade on the street as punters swanned about in an amazing array of covetable shoes (spotted two pairs of YSL tributes and some Gareth Pugh booties, drool!) and delicately flicking, thick, shiny mermaid hair. The show was finally kicked of with music from Hot Little Hands (a perfect match for Ellery!), and Margiela-esque shoulders and Balmain worthy jackets led the brigade as models sauntered down the runway. With an 80’s high school prom vibe, we’re eagerly awaiting seeing the clothes up close and personal to find out if Ellery was worth the wait… And we have a strong suspicion that she will be.

TV A/W 09 ‘Lucky’

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

There’s new TV in store and leopard print and oversized knits are making Shopgirl purr… Looking forward to prowling through winter like it was some kind of imaginary jungle…

Alice in cape land

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

One Trick Pony’s cape is perfect for winter, and even more perfect for the milder weather as we edge into the thick of it. Shopgirl loves a good transformer, and this is one that can be worn forwards, backwards, upside-down, tied around, layered, simply… PHEW! The options are endless and while the recessionista is still on the prowl Shopgirl is happy to know that hers is not one cape, but five…

A-Maise-ingly insane

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

You can breathe a sigh of relief, the Maise ‘Insanity’ dress is back for with more svelte Parisian charisma. With a haunting dark noir and spunky French Riviera chic, Shopgirl is buttering baguettes and preparing the stinky cheeses and sweet, sweet wines for a European style picnic.

It seems that Shopgirl isn’t the only one going insane for Maise, New York party girls of Six Six Sick fame are rocking favourite Maise jeans in pretty peach with their inimitably cute 90’s alterna aesthetic.

Coconut Lu jewellery

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Coconut Lu’s range of sterling silver jewellery has arrived, and Shopgirl wants buddle it all up and elope to some remote location. With intricate imprints and delicate gems, Coconut Lu not only has the cutest moniker, but a collection of earrings, pendants and rings that draw together primal geology, feminine whimsy and a quiet toughness.

Ellery A/W 09 ‘Under The Cherry Moon’

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Shopgirl loves the siren-esque quality of Ellery’s A/W 09 collection. Like a bold goddess rising from the depths of the ocean, there’s a brooding sexuality and yet a romantic sense of a mermaid who just got her land-legs and is itching to become a disco queen. Likewise, you can find Shopgirl in her Ellery leather and suede rock’n’roller tee, or her blood red hammer dress adorned with gold chain belt on the dance-floor until the crack of dawn…
