Rad-ical Jewellery Makeover

August 11th, 2010

Alice is a big fan of sustainable design and recycled products. So, we had big smiles when we heard about the latest project by American not-for-profit organisation Ethical Metalsmiths. The project is aptly named ‘Radical Jewellery Makeover’ and is on display at Artisan in Brisbane. Over the past month Ethical Metalsmiths have teamed up with local Brisbane jewellers and students from the Queensland College of Arts to source metals from their local community, and the community came to the party with donations of old and unwanted jewellery totalling a staggering 18kg worth of synthetic and organic materials.

The students then selected pieces to re-create, refashion and recycle. The works are on display at Artisan in Brisbane now until the 28th August.  Or check out the blog here.

Jeweller Karah Sinden created this piece featuring portions of a donated necklace

Only in Dreams

August 9th, 2010

Carly Hunter’s ss11 collection ‘Non Ho Sonno’ translates to  ‘sleepless’ or ‘I cant sleep’ in Italian.

The collection is comprised of easy to wear trans-seasonal pieces in various textures and shades of  pale.

‘The name (Non Ho Sonno) refers mostly to the insomnia and delusions the designer (Carly) was experiencing while working on this collection, and only slightly references the Dario Argento horror film of the same name.’

‘Many of the designs are made to look like twisted bedsheets and clothing, like the wearer has been sleepwalking in the night. The polka dot netting reflects the hallucinations and double vision that many insomniacs experience. Chadwick Tyler’s ‘Demons’ series and Hiroshi Sugimoto’s ‘Seascapes’ were also references for the designs.’

First delivery just arrived this morning, including theperfectly pinched and pleated  ’Sonno’ dress ($440).

Dress Up does it again

August 9th, 2010

Melbourne designer Stephanie Downey has long been Australian fashion’s ‘one to watch’, but her soon to be delivered Spring/Summer collection which is ‘inspired by interiors’, is sure to place her amongst the top young designers in the country.

“Silhouettes are relaxed yet elegant, waists half gathered with drawstring, coats and dresses slightly roomy, necklines high and cosy, sleeves and hems casually rolled.

Dresses are thoughtfully asymmetrical. Arbitrary draping cascades from a single shoulder or hip; belts hug only half a waist, reminiscent of a casually half drawn curtain or an unmade bed.”

In our eyes she’s already made it, consistently producing collections that are easily wearable, staying true to her soft, vintage inspired aesthetic.

First drop of SS11 just arrived, with more to come. Click here to see more…

Michael Lo Sought-after?

August 4th, 2010

Mere hours after posting these images on our Facebook, we’ve had an influx of calls and emails asking about Alice newbie for SS11, Sydney designer (and all round nice guy) Michael Lo Sordo.

Working closely with Australian artist Christopher Horder to develop his prints (a process of placing inks and paints on canvas and submerging them into solutions so that the colours melt into fluid, cloudlike formations), Michael has created a beautiful collection filled with colour, texture and exquisite drapery. Our hot pick from the collection? The Bambi dress, as worn by Alice’s favourite clotheshorse – Bambi! Arrive in store shortly.
